PICNIC YOUNG Labs

Creative technology workhops for teens (14-18)

The Creative Learning Lab: Kennisnet
Transform your views on education. Participate in the PICNIC YOUNG LABS and your class will experience the latest developments in education via inspiring creative technology workshops. See also PICNIC Young.nl.

The Creative Learning Lab of Waag Society and Kennisnet organize the second edition of the PICNIC YOUNG LABS. With a total of six installations and workshop settings, where groups of students can work on different media and technologies during morning or afternoon sessions.

For teachers and educators the PICNIC YOUNG LABS offer a great chance to show students what the latest developments in the field of media, technology and education make possible.

The labs are each three hours long and take place twice a day. There are 6 workshops in three categories: New Technologies, New Media and Game Design.

New Technologies
Sensor Machines: Create an innovative musical instrument.
Students get an assignment to create their own musical instrument that uses sensors to respond to the environment and individual users. Workshop leaders guide the students in their brainstorm and during the building of the machine. There are different materials available to build with and students are assisted in the use of machines such as the laser-cutter.

NuPlay: build your own interactive installations using 3D games
NuPlay is a software program with which you can generate 3D images. The software uses the power of existing 3D game software, but then with different, self-generated images. It can be directed live with game controllers, web cam, sensors, sounds, electronic musical instruments etc.

New Media
News Maker: when is something considered news?
And how do you visualize the news? What do you tell and what do you leave out of your story...and why? In the News Maker lab, students attempt to tackle these questions. Students will make a journal, in words and images. They do the editing, directing, filming as well as the presentation and production. All of this is done under time pressure, just like in a real newsroom. ‘Cooperation’ is the key for achieving good results. The result of the lab is a radio and/or television news item that will be broadcast via a number of channels.

Media, something for you?
In this lab students investigate the creative industries by working with media that surround them daily. The subjects of this lab are: Narrow Casting, Character Design, Animated Gifs, Photography, Banners, Podcasting and Stop-motion animation. During the workshop students are challenged to create an idea or concept and ultimately a working prototype.

Game design
Make-a-Game: Making a good educational game is a special skill.
In this workshop students learn to make a learning game. After a short theoretical explanation, they start building a game with the program Game Maker. They learn while making educational games for others, making choices and solving problems. If they feel they’ve mastered this skillset, then why not register your students for the Kennisnet Make-a-Game competition and compete with other game makers!

Make-a-mobile game
With Games Atelier, students make their own ‘urban games’ in their direct environment. Based on three game genres (secret trail, adventure, or collect & trade), students design a story, and create and edit it online using a special website. After creating their game, they play each others’ games for real, using a mobile phone and a GPS device. Both teams try to solve their assignments as well and as quickly as they can. The answers are sent via their mobile phone in text and images to the computer and the results can be monitored live. Whoever creates the most exciting game and carries out the assignments best wins!

WIN free PICNIC YOUNG LAB entry!
To stimulate participation throughout the Netherlands, we have organised a pitch for schools where classes have the opportunity to win free entry into PICNIC YOUNG LABS.

All you have to do is answer this question:
What would you like to do with new media or technology in the classroom?

The LABS are sponsored by Regionaal Techno Centrum Amsterdam (RTCA) and Pakhuis de Zwijger.

PICNIC YOUNG LABS take place during PICNIC from September 22nd until 26th at Pakhuis de Zwijger. The labs are interactive workshops for secondary school students (14-18 years old) where they experiment with newmedia tools. They produce their own media, build and play educational games, perform live scientific experiments. Representatives from the creative sector guide and and accompany the students during the labs. Participation is for school classes, registered by the teacher.
