Money Lab

Wednesday 23 September

Waag Society and Imagine IC will host a one-day Money Lab during PICNIC. The morning session (open to all PICNIC attendees) will host a number of expert presentations from both the actual networked and global monetary order and its alternatives. The afternoon session will be spent talking about and tinkering with those alternatives in a hands-on fashion. In its final part, this session seeks to conceptually and practically develop the Bijlmer Euro project. The project aims to research and inspire multi-ethnic trust communities in the super-diverse Amsterdam Bijlmer area, by introducing a new and complementary monetary system.

Participants are requested to contribute to effective and strategic answers to:

1. How can RFID technology make the Bijlmer Euro work? How can and should Euro banknotes be tagged in order to be monitored circulating community stores?

2. How can the (technology of) the Bijlmer Euro be implemented in a socially sustainable way? How can communities and local shops be committed to the project?

Take part in the MoneyLab to think and shape new communities of trust and the best ways to sustain them.

PICNIC Labs
PICNIC labs are part of the wildly buzzing PICNIC Festival. They bring together international thinkers and makers in an intense co-creation process, advancing the field by combining very diverse expertise & experiences in a playful setting. There will be Labs on sustainability, augmented cities, alternative money systems and more. Labs kick-off with a plenary panel (THINK), then go off into an invitation-only intense hands-on making session (MAKE) and present their results at the main conference hall (PITCH).
