Uruguay: Monetary Change in Practice
PICNIC '09 Special
- 23 Sept 09 14:30-15:30
This Special is a direct complement to the keynote where Bernard Lietaer and Henk van Arkel explain the need to change the nature of money. Bernard and Henk are joined by Camilo Ramada who will demonstrate how monetary changes are becoming daily practice in Uruguay.
Please note: YOU MUST HAVE A PICNIC CONFERENCE OR FESTIVAL TICKET TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS SESSION. Clicking on Count Me In simply indicates your interest in participating. The final selection of attendees is decided by our partner for this session.
Based on his practical experience in Brazil, Ramada is responsible for the introduction of a nationwide network of small companies and state agencies in Uruguay. In this network, transactions between businesses, but also taxes and other state services are paid using an internal currency.
Members of this network receive cheap micro-credit in their network's own currency. The currency is used for all transactions between members in the network and can even be used to pay energy bills or taxes.
During this session Ramada will explain how this system attempts to boost the local Uruguayan economy by injecting a new form of liquidity and how this tool can be used to bring other local economies out of the crisis as well, including regions in the Netherlands.
In the second part of this Special, Lietaer, van Arkel and Ramada will lead a question and answer session based on the topics covered.
This session is open to all PICNIC attendees.
