Discovery 07

Why does it always have to be party OR art OR science OR music OR nice people and ideas? We don't know either.

And so this Friday night is filled with a great party AND food for thought for our generation of scientists, artists and the likes. New science, cocktails, artistic research, live music and dj's, etcetera..

Transformatorhuis
Seymour Bits (live music, electro funk) is Bas Bron AKA De Neger des Heils (De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig) AKA Comtron AKA Fatima Yamaha AKA Bastian. In april, Seymour Bits was the supporting act of Scissor Sisters in the Heineken Music Hall. Now, he is a main act on Discovery 07.

Math Girls ft. Denvis (show) are bringing a kitschy quiz show in which the public will compete with a team of attractive, yet cunning Math Girls. Taken care of by the Math Girls Ionica Smeets & Jeanine Daems, PhD students and winners of two Dutch bloggies for www.wiskundemeisjes.nl. Presentation: Denvis (National Science Quiz / The Spades).

Nobody Beats the Drum (live music, beats/samples/hiphop/dance) has won the ‘Grote Prijs van Nederland’ and will soon release a new record. A great new record, according to the previews on MySpace. From the same ‘school’ as C-Mon & Kypski.

Matik (live music, electro pop rock) is an up-and-coming band from Amsterdam. Matik has won the ‘Amsterdamse Popprijs’ and burns down the house everywhere they come, for example at ‘Noorderslag’, and

3D laser scanner partypics. Alex Buksch and Rodderik Lindenbergh, scientists from the Technical University of Delft, are bringing two 3D laser scanners to Discovery 07. Normally, these scanners are used to take vector 3D photographs of tunnels, dikes and squares. At Discovery we will take visitor’s 3D pictures. The first 100 visitors will take their pictures home on usb sticks.

More: DJ's The Walk& Rogerseventytwo, VJ a.o.

Westerliefde

20PK is a series of 16 very short presentations of well- and less well-known, but for sure interesting, people from art, science, culture and more. Speakers that have confirmed their attendance are Bas Haring, Janneke Gerards (30 years old and chairwoman of ‘De Jonge Akademie’), Koert van Mensvoort (technologist, artist), Tim van Opijnen (virologist from Boston), Michiel Buchel (NEMO). TBA: Maaike Hartjes (cartoonist), Victoria Koblenko (political scientist, tv host), Adam Zaretsky (DNA artist).

Network and strategy: UvA economic scientist Eva van den Broek is doing game theory research on people’s negotiation strategies. They turn out to be less rational than you would think. Eva does a pilot study for a new project at Discovery 07. Visitors can win free cocktails for themselves and their friends!

Escher visuals. Recently, mathematicians have computed one of M.C. Escher's drawings into the infinite. The result is an algorithm that has now been combined with a camera. Result: endless pictures and videos, realtime.

Stress: a group of TNO-scientists that looks at performance under stress, normally works with the military. At Discovery 07, they will expose people from the public to stress and test their reactions.

VJ Malu Sin will use footage from the 3D scanners, the 20PK presentations, the Escher visuals, state-of-the-art farmaceutical 3D-animations and more.

More: DJ, artificial intelligence scientists from Groningen will turn sounds into beautiful cochleograms.

Westerunie

Roomforthoughts will investigate the knowledge relation between art, science and the public. Jennifer Kanary Nikolov(a) is the curator of the Discovery 07 art program. Through this, she wants to add to the debate of scientific versus artistic research. She invited artists for a project in which the experiment is central, and that makes it possible to compare both kinds of research.

Digitalized At Your Service is an innovative performance of Valerie Bugman, giving her audience the opportunity to send messages in a personal, secret and safe way, through skin-to-skin communication. The service goes on without stopping and is available all over the location with well trained Messengers and Waitresses.

Brandon Ballengée, eco artist / biologist, will kidnap some of Discovery 07 visitors for a nocturnal visit to the grounds. In every terrain, Brandon can draw special attention to the nature that can be found.

Ani_Mate is research on the relationship between the moving surrounding and digital systems. Ani Mate was a quite large and old-fashioned machine, designed to manipulate images by touching them. I showed the relationship between the animated image, the body and the machine itself. Finally, the images came into movement, became three dimensional and began to tell their story. Marion Tränkle will give an artistic presentation of her work with Ani_Mate. A new chapter will be added to the performance. Marion Tränkle will be there to actively speak to the visitors.

NWO CO-OP: In principio erat verbum
Krien Clevis (artist) and Peter Hagoort (scientist, Radboud University Nijmegen) will carry out part of their research, called ‘In principio erat verbum’, with the public of Discovery 07. Visitors are requested to enter a dark space, to record their reactions to specially selected images of fear.

NWO CO-OP: NomadicMILK
Esther Polak (artist) and Michiel de Lange (scientist, Erasmus University Rotterdam) will, for Discovery 07, make a 15 minute documentary about their project NomadicMILK. The film will be looped and shown in a lounge setting. For this project, Esther and Michiel are looking for the paradoxical character of mobile technologies. The project aims to find out how nomadic Fulani shepherds from Western Africa experience space, place and mobility when they are confronted with new technologies that interfere with their former ideas of mobility.

NWO CO-OP: MoonzooM
Jeroen Werner (artist) and Geert Somsen (scientist, Universiteit Maastricht) will attempt to make a living telescope. They will need the help of visitors.

Rietveld Dogtime & OBG
The cooperation between the ‘Research Group for Mobility and Behaviour’, and students of the Rietveld Academy department of Interaction Design / Unstable Media, has lead to a experimental setting that consists of four interactive installations. Aim of the project was to design and test alternative interfaces and solutions. The four installations ask for a great involvement of the public: they are games that help us find our own playful Self.
