Marjolijn Bloemmen started to work for Waag Society as head of programme sustainabily in February 2008. Formerly she worked as a researcher for Wageningen University and Alterra. In addition to her activities at Waag Society, Marjolijn conducts a consultancy which supports the green sector of the information society.
Marjolijn was originally trained as a landscape architect in Belgium and Engeland and graduated in regional planning at Wageningen Universiteit. Her particular niche for already 10 years is to combine green, spatial content with technology; As such she got acquainted with GIS modelling, mobile and interactive applications, 3D visualisation, serious gaming as well as monitoring- and evaluation systems.
According Marjolijn the main challenge for the programme sustainability at Waag Society is to develop creative, networked technology which can serve as a catalyst for the change of behaviour. The latter relates to the players of a production chain which could be organised more sustainably. In this respect, Waag Society facilitates the cooperation between industry, policy makers, knowledge centres as well as developers of creative and technology products. Waag Society typically aims to break the monopoly of scientists, by facilitating the participation of lay people and artists. An additional challenge is to ‘greenify’ the technology which is used or developed by the Waag Society itself.
